log shipping vs. Replication

Ive never used it so please bear with me. I was told that
I would have to:
Take a full backup of BoxB.
Transfer it to the Location of BoxA.
Restore it on BoxA.
Is this not the case? I thought it sounded odd but was re-
assured.
The way I look at it is
1) Clustering replicates/clones a server
2) backing up and restoring the database to the standy server, replicates
the database
3) Log Shipping is a continous backup and restore of the database
4) replication replicates transactions
It depends on your requirements, and how expensive downtime is to you, or
how valuable your data is. For disaster recovery most people look at
clustering solutions.

Log Shipping to old box?

My primary SQL Server box is 2005 Standard x64 running on 2 quad-core processors. I'm licensed for 2 processors.

I'd like to set up some kind of redundancy. The hardware I have available is about 4 years old and is currently running SQL Server 2000. Let's assume I upgrade the old box to SQL Server 2005 Standard. A couple of questions:

1) It seems the hardware gap between the 2 will make little difference in a log shipping. Please confirm this. Any other things that might be an issue?

2) Do I need lots of CALs on the backup box for Log Shipping? Or can I get by with 5?

3) I'd like to schedule log shipping pretty often--maybe every 5 or 10 minutes. Will this be an issue?

2. No, Yes, as long as it is not accessed by users that are not covered with CALs. A SQL Server CAL is good for all SQL Servers in the domain.

3. 5-10 minutes 'should' not be an issue. As long as the performance/load differential is not so great that the log cannot be applied in the time alloted.

Another option with SQL 2005 is Database Mirroring. Have you explored the benefits of Database Mirroring?

I've read a little about Database Mirroring. How will my old hardware affect the mirroring process? Will I have trouble with the slower server keeping up with the transactions?

The same issue occurs with Log Shipping.

Will, in fact, the old box have enough 'power' to keep up with the data flow. That is something you will have to test.

I guess I made this assumption (that could be very wrong):

Log Shipping moves data in batches. Database mirroring moves data by record or transaction. (Not sure what method is used). A batch append should be less stressful on a backup server than a bunch of individual appends.

Even if these are true, maybe the difference in stress is much less than I think.

It could go either way.

I would set up a test environment and test both if they seemed equally valid solution candidates. You're trying to balance the trade-offs of cost of solution vs. speed of recovery.

Log shipping goes out of sync

Hi
I have two SQL 2000 boxes setup to log ship. The box being shipped to
is also the monitor
The size of the db being shipped is around 110GB - so the initial log
ship first creates and copies across the entire db (takes a while)
then begins the transaction logs.
The problem is that the log ship goes out of sync also immediately -
from testing I've managed to get the first shipped transaction log to
load, and sometimes the second, but never further as it gets out of
sync.
Things I've tried:
Changing the schedule from the default 15 minutes to 2 hours (for copy
and load)
Ensuring the log ship process doesn't clash with a routine backup
Any suggestions?

Are you running transaction log backups IN ADDITION to the log
shipping process? This will break the log shipping chain. Log
shipping works by taking a backup of the transaction log and restoring
that backup onto another database. If you run your own independent
log backup, you're advancing the LSN pointer, throwing the log
shipping backups out of sync.

I'm running a daily log backup, truncate and shrink - which I realise
now is going to cause issues with the log shipping. However, and
forgive me if this appears trivial, but the reason for run a log
backup, truncate and shrink is to prevent the log file getting too
big, as it currently grows at the rate of 20-30gb a day. If I rely on
the log shipping process only, will this provide adequate truncating
of the log?

Couple of key things here:
1. Log backups truncate the log - the more frequently that you run a
log backup, the quicker committed transactions will get truncated, and
the less likely your log is to grow. Note that LARGE transactions can
still cause growth, because they can't be truncated until fully
committed.
2. You are hurting your overall performance in one, possibly two,
ways. By repeatedly shrinking the log file, you are forcing SQL
Server to grow it again as needed, which introduces additional
overhead, possibly during a busy period. Also, repeatedly growing/
shrinking/growing/shrinking will lead to disk fragmentation, which
will also ultimately hurt your performance.
My advice would be to not use the log-shipping wizard that is built-
in. You can kill two birds with one stone by writing your own backup
routines. Create a log backup job that runs every hour (we do 5-
minute intervals here), have that job create backup files that contain
a date/time stamp, place these files into some folder, let's say
"FolderX". Write a log-shipping routine that monitors FolderX for new
files. When a new file is detected, your log shipping routine should
restore it and record the file name in a logging table. It then goes
back to monitoring FolderX for new files that aren't in the logging
table.
It's really not as complicated as it seems, and you'll solve all of

I now have the transaction log shipping running fine - I have used the
Wizard for now so I'll see how it goes.
One thing though - having removed the additional process to backup and
truncate the log, the log is now not being truncated.
Any thoughts?

As I said, I would suggestion NOT using the wizards... I've never
used that log shipping wizard, I have no idea what sort of backup job
it creates. Create your OWN processes, then you know what's going
on...

As I said, I would suggestion NOT using the wizards... I've never

log shipping barfing

sql2k sp2
Log Shipping gets set up successfully. The db gets created
on the secondary box. All the TLog backups get transferred
to the secondary box. But then after some time it gets out
of sync. In the reporting file there is the message:
(snippet)
(SQL Server does not exist or access is denied)
How could this be since it was able to intialize the new
db? If it never did that and I got this message it would
make more sense than creating the db but not baing able to
connect after that.

Which job is failing? Sounds like the restore job on the secondary. Are you
sure SQL Agent on the secondary can connect to the secondary SQL Server?
